How do solar panels work?

Solar panels are made using photovoltaic (PV) cells that convert the sun’s energy into electricity. PV cells sit between layers of semiconducting materials such as silicon.
When sunlight hits the cells, this gives them energy, creating an electric field. This photoelectric effect creates the current required to produce electricity.
